Rum Issue in the Royal Navy

I have been reading some of the comments about women serving in British Submarines. Some are just plain silly, some make sense, but the one that caught my attention was this. The RN Submarine service always was and remains a volunteer service. However, it appears now it is becoming increasingly difficult to find enough volunteers, hence the reason women can join. I have a different theory on the shortage of volunteers, Rum!!!. Way back in 1959 at Tot time (rum issue)aboard HMS Eastbourne we were complaining about having no money, a bright spark suggested we volunteer for boats because they received an extra shilling per day. With a tot of rum inside me that seemed like a admirable solution to my financial woes, so I volunteered. A year later long after I had forgotten that particular tot time, my draft notice to submarine training arrived. So my solution is bring back the rum issue and they might get a few more financially strapped volunteers like I was? heck I still am!!!
Cheers and keep reading.
