I wonder if any high school students, indeed any Canadians could tell me the significances of 2012?? if I said it might be an important and historical anniversary for Canada?
Remember the War of 1812? it began 200 years ago when Canada was still known as British North America. The war was a defining moment in our history. If our forefathers had not stood their ground and fought we might well, all be citizens of the USA today. In the end a peace was negotiated with a treaty signed on Christmas eve of 1814. General Brock, Laura Secord, Lt Fitzgibbon, and Tecumseh are familiar names from the conflict. On the US side a young lawyer Francis Scott Key scribble a few notes during the bombardment of Fort Henry, he later added music. Those scribble notes began “Oh,say can you see by the dawns early light.
Its seems to me this is a very important part of our history, yet I wonder if it is even mentioned in our schools today. I can only imagine the answers one would get doing a street poll on the subject. We should be proud of our history, I’m not suggesting we wrap ourselves in the flag, but at least let us remember.
History is a great subject and we can learn so much from it,it should be promoted seriously in our schools.
Just the thoughts of an Irish-Canadian who loves history.
Cheers and keep reading.
