Sunday the 6th May 2012 (First Sunday in May) is Battle of the Atlantic Sunday. The one day in the year we make special mention of this Battle. It began on the 3rd Sept 1939 and ended 8th May 1945. Churchill stated in 1941 this is the longest, largest and most complex Naval Battle in history. A total of 3500 merchant ship and 175 warships were lost, for the Germans 783 UBoats were lost. The photo I have posted is HMCS Sackville the last surviving corvette of the RCN. During the war Canada produce 400 of these tiny corvettes as escort vessels for the convoys. The RCN grew to be the worlds third largest navy after USN and RN. The vital convoys kept the British Isles in the war, Hitler had tried hard to starve England into surrender but failed thanks to the brave seaman of the Allied Navies. Remember these brave souls in a church prayer on Sunday. Bravo Zulu.
Cheers and keep reading.
