Yesterday 14th June 2012 along with our friends Carl and Jan we visited the Elmira Railway Station Museum. The station is located at the end of the line near North Lake and beyond Souris. Its very well displayed and rich in Island history. I’d recommend it as a great visit for tourists and islanders alike.
Looking through the many photos and historical facts I came across an item that is somewhat similar to what is happening on the island today. As all islanders know our provincial government is determined to impose the hated HST upon us beginning in April 2013. Back on the 1st July 1873 the PEI Railway was in serious financial trouble. The government of the day had four choices. (1) Allow the railway to go bankrupt. (2) Raise Taxes, (3) Return to Colonial Rule. (4) Accept Ottawas offer of $3.2 million and join Confederation. Of course we joined confederation and the railway continued running. Today our provincial government is mired in debt, mostly of their own making and the same question arises, what to do. Well we probably can’t go back to Colonial rule, and heaven forbid we allow our politicians go bankrupt, so what is the answer??? Easy, raise taxes by taking another hand out from the Feds and impose HST on islanders. Damn it, the railway is gone and I missed the last train out of here. Grrrrrrrr.
Cheers and keep reading.
