The first photos of the wreck of the Titanic were released to the public on this day in 1985. What an eerie feeling for the few remaining survivors of that tragic night in 1912. Imagine seeing the great ship on the ocean floor after walking her decks and feeling the total security of an unsinkable ship 73 years earlier.
No other sea tragedy has garnered such a following as Titanic. The many books and movies, the television shows and documentaries, museums and artifacts The question is , why? I think the simple answer is the fact the ship was claimed to be unsinkable, and as we know she sank on her maiden voyage with a great loss of life. However, I doubt my grandfather ever imagined the fate or fame of this ship as he heated the rivets for the hull plates. For him it was a wage at the end of a long week of toil. For him it was extremely hard and hot labour, even dangerous. For me it is a double edged sword! The worlds most famous ship was built in my home town. The worlds most tragic maritime accident was from my home town. Might that be called an oxymoron???
Cheers and keep reading.
