There was a lot of talk on Radio yesterday regarding electric cars. The very expensive Tesla electric car was on the island and the company were installing ten free charging points around the island. However, is the electric car the answer??? I see long lines and long waits at these charging stations. Where does the electricity come from to run the vehicles? wind power-coal-nuclear-dams or oil??? Seems to put us back in the same position we are in today. The photo I have posted is of two electric vehicles running in the city of Belfast circa 1920 thru 1950. Both are now long gone and begs the question why?? I realize today the modern electric vehicles are greatly improved but again the question by how much and at what cost??
I’m not convinced electric is the way forward, not sure what is other than mass transit. When I think of the monies spent in the cause of the automobile it is staggering. The road systems, the growth of private vehicles, the taxes on gas, roads, registrations, licenses, tires, repairs, health, insurance, parking spaces and the list goes on and on. Imagine if all that money had been spent on an efficient transit system??? It would be nice if we could look fifty years into the future! At the beginning of the twentieth century the mayor of New York hailed the new automobile as the answer to pollution. He was referring to the mass amounts of horse manure in the streets. We merely solved one problem for another!!!
Answer to yesterdays submarine question.
The Confederate States Submarine Huntley.
She sank the USS Housatonic with a torpedo on the night of 17th Feb 1864. The Hunley sank with all hands during the attack the reason for the loss of the submarine was undetermined. She had a crew of eight.
