The Moving Clear Out Continues, Sadly

mess kit guy 0029splice the main brace
You may not see a connection between the two photos in this post, other than both are nautical. Well, allow me to explain, the four signal flags have a very significant meaning!! ” Splice the Main Brace” No wiser eh? unless of course you were a Navy rum rat. Splicing the main brace is the rare occasion when the Queen or perhaps the Admiralty order the issue of a tot of rum to the fleet.
Now, what has all this got to do with the handsome sailor in the other photo. That’s the sad part, I have decided to sell my mess kit, that’s the uniform I’m wearing in the photo. Actually its not considered a uniform, it is formal wear for such events as a mess dinner, gala events and such. I have reached the decision that my time of attending such events is past, and the kit should be moved on to a younger sailor. They are very expensive, very desirable and a young officer often finds them so costly to be out of reach. At least that is what I’m trying to tell myself having decided to sell mine. It is one of the last vestiges of my long Naval career and parting with it is difficult even though its been a while since it was last worn by me. I have a probable buyer so its likely to be gone soon and will be one less item we will have to take with us when we move. I doubt the Queen will hear of my misery and order “Splice the Main Brace” so I shall have to do it myself. Off to the kitchen for a large glass. sob sob sob!!!

God Bless and keep reading

Making the break is hard, but in all honesty I really don’t want to associate myself with people like Holloway and keeping the kit makes that a possibility. Besides I have worn it twice in the last 10 or 15 years and it is becoming a wee bit tight in places.

I admit was a bit torn by my decision to sell, but have only wore it twice in the last 10 or 15 years, not too mention it might be getting a little tight in places. But I will still dress nicely for your birthday!!!!
