Boycott The Sochi Olympics

This is a huge issue but as always it is gathering the usual rhetoric from politicians, particularly in the US. Obama has not ruled out a boycott but many voices are saying it will do no good. I hasn’t worked in the past and it will accomplish nothing this time. They say with the US out, Russia will win the lions share of medals. Sadly these people are missing the point, its not about medals or who wins/loses. Its about human rights, in the 1936 Olympic Games Hitler refused to shake the black hand of Jessie Owens. If we accept modern Russian laws against the Gay population then we have hardly moved beyond Hitler’s racial policies. I don’t believe the World needs to wait to see what decision the US take, we all need to act now. Form a united front and remove the games from Sochi, that is the correct answer. This is not just an issue that should be left to the gay population to defend, we should all defend it. All athletes should boycott the games. Can you imagine if the policy was “Whites Only” or “Women not allowed” the whole World would be outraged, So what is the difference here. Oh its just a bunch of gays, so who cares? A few years ago that could have been “Oh its just a bunch of Nigger’s” so who cares. There is no difference discrimination is discrimination no matter how we portray it. I do apologize for using that dreadful N word, I would never use it as it was once intended. I only use it here to shock and highlight this issue. It is about human rights and dignity, about recognizing that all people are equal or at least should be. Boycott Sochi and move the Games now!
