While I have been aware of the contentious issues surrounding the Fracking process, I have only been vaguely aware of the reasons. Last evening I watched the CBC TV show “The Nature of Things” with David Suzuki and I now have a greater understanding of the dangers of Fracking.
Money and greed are the real motivations behind this frightening and reckless race for more energy. Yes of course it will create jobs, boost the local economies, perhaps provide cheap energy for the US markets for the next hundred years. But at what cost? That is indeed a huge question and the answers are not good. As I understand it the process uses vast quantities of water to force the gas to the surface. This water is laced with numerous toxic chemicals, it can be reused a few times but eventually becomes too dirty. How do they get rid of this contaminated water, it can’t be recycled, it can’t be cleaned and it can’t be returned to the lakes or wells from which it was pumped. What do we do with nuclear waste? bury it deep underground, the same thing is planned for this contaminated water, they intend to pump it deep into the earth. Presently in the US and in the Provinces of British Columbia and Alberta there are hundreds of these fracking wells. They use trillions of litres of water on a daily basis. Water that you and I need, that farmers need, that wild life need, that plant life need. Has this world gone crazy?? what are we allowing a few greedy companies to do to us. Water is not the only issue here, these wells allow toxic gases to bleed off into the air we breathe. These toxic gases add thousands of tons every day to the green house effect. The wells are located close to schools, hospitals, play grounds and private residences.
So what about Fracking? On the plus side it creates energy, jobs, money. On the negative side it causes deadly health issues, untold damage to the air we breath, uses unimaginable amounts of the worlds precious water resources that can’t be replaced. It is rapidly adding green house gases causing climate change. These are just the issues so far realized, no one actually knows the overall or long term effect this will have on the planet. Earth quakes and droughts come to mind. But not to worry lets just continue to allow the Oil & Gas companies make money. Does any one wonder what out politicians are doing about this latest threat to the human race??? Probably raking in the cash as usual and doing nothing!!!
I don’t suggest we go back to living in caves, however, we must find safer cleaner sources of energy, solar, wind and water come to mind. No Fracking Way. Speak out people demand this insane process is stopped now, or at the very least, stop it expanding any further.
Sorry if this is a bit scary and it is, but its up to us to stop it.
God Bless and keep reading.
