It is almost that time of year again, Remembrance Day and the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Campaign. Here in Charlottetown we are also awaiting the grand opening of a new target Store. On the CTV news last night veterans were interviewed about the Target Store policy regarding the selling of Poppies in their stores. I don\t have all the facts but understand that originally the policy was no veterans selling in their stores. Later that was corrected by the Legion Command, they stated Target policy was to allow veterans to stand outside their stores, or just inside the entrance if the weather was inclement . What a big concession! Target are all heart!!! No veteran should be expected to stand for two or three hours outside or inside any business promoting the Poppy Campaign. It is outrageous to think Target or any major box store would even consider such a policy. Veterans must be treated with respect, and in most stores they are. Places like Wal Mart-Sobeys etc welcome veterans inside and often provide a table and chair in a prime location. If what I have heard about Target is true then I would suggest they have shot themselves in the foot before they have opened up for business. I dare say their grand opening will still be busy, people are curious and will want to see the new store. That enthusiasm will quickly wear off once people know the policy against the Legion. Not much difference between a Target store or a Wal Mart, but they both want our money and I for one know where I will be spending mine. It does make one wonder what sort of people run these large corporations, and make policies that will surely offend the very people they are Target-ing (pun intended).
God Bless and keep reading.
NOT TRUE. No back peddling.. the Legion was ALWAYS welcome INSIDE Target stores.
Your opinion, but it was true at the Charlottetown store on PEI last remembrance day (2013) poppy drive. The Legionaries were told they were not allowed inside at the Charlottetown Target store but could stand outside. I don’t know about 2014 but it was fact for 2013.
