My New Bicycle 1951

herculesIn 1951 I finally received my first and long awaited brand new bicycle. It was the most amazing machine this twelve year old boy had ever imagined, let alone own! It had a Sturmey Archer three speed, and the all important hub dynamo. The dynamo meant I could ride at night and didn’t have to worry about batteries dying en-route. It also freed me from having to buy new batteries on a regular basis. At school there were covered cycle sheds and they usually contained more than a 100 bicycles on any given school day. I couldn’t wait to ride my new bike to school about eight miles away. I had to leave about half an hour earlier than the bus, but who cared I loved travelling on this marvelous machine. It was worth the long ride just to have my school mates admire it as I cycled to the sheds. My bike was manufactured by The Hercules Cycle Company, it wasn’t at the top end of bikes, a bit more like a economy model. However to me it was a Rolls Royce.  The idea to write about my bicycle today came in another email featuring the 1950 Huffy Radiobicycle. I have never seen one and was quite awed by this over the top American bicycle from the 1950’s. What an amazing bicycle, my Hercules pales in comparison. I hope you will take a moment to view the attachment, and if you know of one lurking in someones garden shed, let me know!!!
