Recently in the Globe & Mail, Wayne Easter the MP for the Malpeque region of PEI, blatantly and without any real evidence accused an environmentalist of being the most likely culprit placing needles in Island potatoes. I’m assuming this is merely his theory as I have not heard of an arrest happening. How about my completely different theory and one that could be nearer the truth. If we look back at history we will find when people in power alienate a particular group of people the majority of the population tend to believe them. Adolph Hitler very successfully proved this point in Germany, first alienating the Jews, then the Communists, the unions etc etc. Think about this for a minute, if major players in the production of potatoes found it increasingly difficult to continue spraying the crops while facing growing opposition, what might they do. Alienate the group with the loudest voice of opposition, the environmentalist! Create an atmosphere of distrust in those who protest loudest. Paint groups such as the Green Party, Pesticide Free PEI and or other such groups as the culprits. They could yell from the roof tops that environmentalist are trying to destroy the Island way of life . They are intent on destroying the economy, eliminating desperately need jobs, bankrupting farmers and the list goes on. If they are not stopped the evil environmentalist movement will ruin the Island. People will become homeless, penniless, hungry, unemployed and finally be forced to move away. Not so hard to create such a bleak and scary atmosphere, and to panic people. As you know the media love to dive into these types of controversial stories, it sells papers. You might ask, but what about the cost to the farmer who had to recall tons of potatoes? I’d say it was a drop in the bucket if the Industry was behind him. What are a few bags of spuds to a billion dollar industry? especially if it achieves their goals. So Mr Easter this is my theory!!! perhaps someone in corporate spud land could be the culprit. God Bless and keep reading.
