I read in today’s Guardian that the Young Voters of PEI and the UPEI Student Union are hosting a discussion panel on electoral reform. When we consider the voter turn out on the island was 86%. That most people were shocked to see one district decided by a coin toss. That this election saw almost a quarter of island voter vote other than the two main party’s, but win only one seat in the house. The first past the post system clearly does not work. The discussion will be chaired by David Atkinson, Journalist and Author. It will include a panel made up of Don Desserud, Mary Ellen McInnis (coin toss loser) Peter Bevan Baker and Robert Morrisssey federal liberal candidate for Egmont. It was interesting to see Robert Morrissey named to this panel because I have emailed all three Egmont candidates him at least twice. In the emails I posed the question asking his and his Party’s stand on proportional representation?? Guess what? no response and yet here he is on the very panel asking this same question. I also contacted Gail Shea, she and her Government have no plans the change the voting system, no surprise there. Herb Dickeson and the NDP are very interested in electoral reform. I will try to follow the discussions and will be most interested in their conclusions.
There is absolutely no question we need electoral reform and we need it in place before the next election .
