Motor Vehicle Inspection PEI

GetAttachment.aspxA member of the Liberal Government raised the question of why we need safety inspections for new cars, or indeed for the first two years in the life of a new car. Minister Biggar claimed it was important because of all the recalls of new vehicles.  Duh? When did PEI MVI last pick up a manufactures defect. Lets go back to the beginning in 1969, we had two brand new Inspectors running the new safety program, they looked grand in their new official uniforms complete with buster brown belts. However, on the question of being qualified in motor vehicle safety, that remains questionable. I recall being told if I installed a Thrush Muffler on a PEI car it would fail inspection. Reason? too noisy! What that had to do with safety remains a mystery to me not to mention without a decibel meter noise is just an opinion.  Then in the early 1980’s a Charlottetown VW dealership claimed they could not safety inspect the new current VW model because it only had one windshield wipe. The one large wiper cleared the whole windscreen. The inspection form required two working wipers?? More nonsense, but the inspection fees continued to climb. Now today we have a Minister who like her many MVI predecessors claims she knows why we need an inspection on new vehicles.  Her answer, Recalls!!! she stated, not too long ago vehicles were recalled for a steering defect. My question, was this defect picked up at the MVI centre??? or was it a few years later when a component suddenly failed? Ms Biggar is refusing to save island motorist a few tax dollars  in the interest of safety. Rubbish, we pay gas tax, registration tax, license tax,new car tax, used car tax, tire tax and the MVI tax and tax on parts and service.. When will enough be enough? Ms Biggar might claim island motorist are safe, but our wallets are certainly not safe from Governments grasping hands. Disgusted!!!

God Bless and keep reading.
