Lawrence MacAulay fears the future of the Wood Island ferry service would be threatened if tolls were removed from the Confederation Bridge. As the longest serving MP from PEI, he offers this scintillating piece of wisdom by pointing out the obvious. I quote,” Lets be very clear, if you are going to start making things free, you have to make other things free”, and how far down road do you go” end quote. Now that is a real example of nonsensical politician speak!. In his long and well paid career as a Member of Parliament his most significant accomplishment was probably keeping the ferry running. Islanders are aware ferry employees are mostly constituents from his riding. I have no objections to him looking after the people that have kept him elected for all these years. However, if he believes we should all be paying the annual increasing bridge fees in order to run a ferry that at best, takes some heavy trucks and a
modicum of tourist traffic thru the summer months, he needs to really think again. The majority of Islanders travels off island via the bridge whether it be summer or winter. There are four obvious reasons for this,(1) it is more convenient,(2) faster than the ferry (ten minutes opposed to one hour fifteen minutes) (3) the cost is considerably lower than the ferry (4) ferry doesn’t run thru the winter months.. Should Mr MacAulay have his way we will not see a toll free bridge, even though it is something I’m sure all islanders would appreciate. While no one wishes to see islanders to lose their jobs, it is nevertheless a fact of life, things change and people move on. I’m exasperated and extremely disappointed to
see an Island members of parliament who is clearly working against the majority of islanders.
God Bless and keep reading.
HI BEN,
Hopefully the Bridge does not become the only thing on the Island. besides Taxes, that support the Island like NB Power does to New Brunswick. It is the only thing that seems to work consistently year after year to make a profit to keep the Government stable and in debt.
Neville.
Hi Neville gee if NB power is the only thing the makes a profit year after year, you are lucky. We have two families controlling agriculture, McCains and Irving, a private company controlling the bridge, they give out no info regarding number of vehicles crossing or profits. Finally we have 27 MLA’s over paid and looking after approx 135.000 constituent . Grrrs.
Hi Ben, Hence the weather Donkey last week, thought that appropriate for a faming community
