Its interesting to see the hype surrounding Mike Duffy these days. He is featured on TV-Radio and front page news in the Media. Not forgetting a poll that claimed 70% of islanders don’t want him as their senator. Wonder who decided on the need of this poll and who paid for it, any guesses!!!!!!!
To say Duffy is a controversial figure would surely be dead centre on target. The last few years have seen him go from PM Harper’s number one fund raiser and high profile newly appointed conservative senator to 31 serious charges of fraud and other alleged criminal activities. He has spent the best part of a year in court fighting these 31 charges. He has been acquitted on all counts and is now back in the senate as an Independent. Although his trial is over and he was found not guilty by the judge, he still faces the court of public opinion. By most accounts they appear to have found him guilty. I can’t speak for the whole country but it certainly seems to be the case on Prince Edward Island, the province he supposedly represents. The feelings of islanders are genuine and understandable, when Duffy became a senator he concentrated on helping Harper. What if anything he might have done for his home province has been forgotten in the mists of time. Probably the biggest issue and indeed a very sore point is the fact Duffy does not live on the island, he has lived in Ottawa for the last forty years. However, lets put aside his residency and recent court case and take a look at the man. As an independent it is questionable how much pull he would have in the red chamber these days. Harper is gone, the Liberals are in power. Here on PEI Liberals are also in power, and its doubtful the MacLauchlan crowd will make life easy for Mike. Nevertheless, he is a force to be reckoned with, so maybe we islanders should give him a chance. He may not be interested, he may feel we have given him the boot, maybe he will resign? All are possibilities, but not usually Duffy’s style, I think he will fight for his tarnished reputation. If this should be the case then having him in our corner might not be a bad thing. We have a very slanted political situation on the island,Liberals are running roughshod over us. They have a majority and are using it to have their own way. Just look at the recent appointments to health care!. With Duffy’s potent oratorical skills we could see some sort of balance reached between liberals and conservatives. Heaven knows the island conservatives need all the help they can get. Already the Guardian and Compass (Liberal Hacks)are attempting to paste Duffy as some one we should avoid. Editorials claiming some 70% of islanders don’t want Duffy as our senator, interviews on Compass with a similiar line. Maybe the Provincial Government is just a wee bit scared that the ole Duffster might rock the boat. Where is the conservative party through all this??? they should be inviting Duffy to speak on there behalf. He was found not guilty so maybe we should give him a second chance. After all we are good at giving second , heck even third chances to the liberals. Who would have believed after the Ghiz scandal we would elect another majority liberal government. Just some food for though folks, please digest it carefully.
God Bless and keep reading.
