First of the two Proportional Options

ELECTORAL REFORM PLEBISCITE NOVEMBER 2016 zflagpei

When you enter the voting booth you will be faced with five choices

(1) DUAL MEMBER PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION

(2) MIXED MEMBER PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION.

(3) FIRST PAST THE POST (CURRENT SYSTEM)

(4) FIRST PAST THE POST PLUS LEADER.

(5) PREFERENTIAL VOTING.

Please Note :- The choices will not necessarily be listed in the order I have presented  above.

Clear as mud right??? I believe the Government  intends it to be confusing. So it is really important that you understand the options before you vote.

Today I will try to explain the option Dual Member PR

The Island will have 14 districts, each with two MLA’s. You mark a SINGLE X for your candidate  of choice. Your district will have two MLA’s, elected from amongst  the local candidates on the ballot. Mostly they will be from different party’s. It is fair, if the party or independent candidate you voted, wins 25% of the party vote across the island, they will get 25%  of the  the seats in the Assembly. With two different MLA’s in your district they will need to cooperate and provide better representation to  their voters.

This is one of the two options that I’m leaning toward.  However It is not my intent to influence your decision. That is solely your own choice.

If you wish further information or have a question visit the PEI-PR web site. http://www.peipr.ca

Tomorrow I will attempt to explain Mixed Member Proportional Representation.
