The Baby Soother?

Going up in Belfast in the early 1950’s I only knew one term for the baby soother. We called them Dummy Tits! and they were very common in the back streets of the city. Often mothers would stick the dummy tit in jam and put it in the young child’s mouth, then put the child out in the street.. Can you imagine the dirt in the streets and on the baby’s hands and mouth!!. They played usually sitting on the ground and picking up whatever broken toys etc that happened to be there. While in today’s society the term dummy tit might be considered sexist and offensive, as a child it sounded quite normal to me. I never once made the connection between a woman’s breast and the dummy tit. How the world has change and I fear not for the better.

God Bless and keep reading
