Remembering lost friends at Christmas

Michael Chislett was my shipmate and best friend. We sailed together on the submarine Taciturn. Later in Canada we re-connected whilst I was with the 6th Canadian Submarine Squadron. Michael had left the RN in 1966 and re-enlisted in the RCN. His beautiful wife Betty was a Canadian hence his joining the RCN and making a home in Nova Scotia. They and their four children later moved across Canada to the West Coast, where Michael finally retired from the navy in the 1980s. Sadly my friend departed this world before his time. Robby Mc Robb was a later in life friend having met on PEI in the 1990s. What we had in common was we both served in the military as boys. Robby was a boy soldier in the Canadian Army and I a boy seaman in the Royal Navy. We became good friends even though Robby moved to the West Coast and later returned to his native Scotland. Through the wonder of the internet we always managed to keep in touch. We shared many concerns regarding the Royal Canadian Legion and other subjects of interest. Robby died suddenly a few months ago, it was a bitter loss of a old friend. In this season of Christmas, in the warmth of caring and loving we miss old friends more deeply than ever. Nevertheless, this is also the time of year when I remember the good times we shared in our youth and later life. I’m sure Michael and Robby would have been good friends had they met. I shall always remember them with a special fondness and will lift a glass to their memories. Always it shall be my special privilege to have known and to have shared a part in their lives. Rest In Peace my shipmate and comrade.
God Bless and Merry Christmas
