Defund the Police?

Lately there have been numerous calls to defund the police. While I understand the anger, particularly with some US police forces. I have to wonder how sensible defunding our police forces would actually be? In the 1940-50s in the UK we were taught to respect the police, if we found ourselves in trouble seek out a policeman for help. I can’t say for certain but believe the British Metropolitan police service have one standard of training. I don’t think that is the case in Canada, and clearly not in the US. Sheriffs are elected and mostly they appoint they own deputies. Here in Canada we have a patchwork of police officers. Some small towns and villages have one or two locally hired policemen. Some attend the nearest police academy, others are just hired, perhaps they have a military background or some qualification similar. Whatever the system it’s not universal to the nation. I believe nurses have universal training across Canada. Doctors, tradespeople, engineers and so on are all held to a national standard. So why not our local police forces, I know we have the RCMP and they are a national force, but rarely police city’s or towns. If our law enforcement was standardized to one training policy across the country things might improve. If Canadians are to trust the police the police must change their approach toward us. Going for guns, tasers etc is all too common on our streets. The job of the police is indeed dangerous but it must be tempered with caution, not every citizen is a criminal. Training would help the police to determine different sets of circumstances more readily. Maybe you don’t agree, but to defund would not make our streets safer, probably cause the opposite. So those are my thoughts for this warm and sunny Monday morning.
God Bless and keep reading.
