Surely we must have one or two politicians who can see the need for safer lanes for bicycles and disable vehicles. Surely we have at least one engineer who could come up with a plan. How about changing some roads/streets from two way to one way traffic. Something along the same lines as Victoria Park, where on lane is closed to motor cars and other vehicles. It might be tricky but not impossible. I realize some attempts are already being made, but clearly they are just scratching the surface. Most of the present bike lanes are, if we are honest, merely the edge of main thoroughfares. Hardly safe or suitable for cyclist let alone a wheelchair. I believe many side streets could become oneway, allowing safer access routes leading downtown in our cities and towns. Looking at the systems in many European Countries that are very bike friendly, I have to wonder why we can’t do better here. Traffic is just as heavy in many major European cities, yet bicycles are everywhere. With the high fuel prices, now would be a good time to promote such plans to provide safe cycle routes. The provincial government is giving a rebate to purchase a bicycle, then why not provide safe and practical places for there use.
God Bless and keep pedalling.
