Roughly 66 years ago I qualified for my Admiralty driving permit in Singapore dockyard. I already held a Northern Ireland driver license, so when the ship called for qualified drivers, I volunteered. Four drivers were required for our visit to Melbourne Australia during the Olympic Games of 1956. I was one of the most junior crew members and never imagined I’d have a chance. Duty Jeep driver was seen as a great job whilst visiting the city of Melbourne. To my utter surprise I was selected, but learned later there were only four qualified drivers among the crew.
We were sent to the transport manager in the dockyard for our tests. I passed with out any problems, I was a very happy and proud young sailor/driver
Tomorrow I will tell you of one very traumatic Jeep driving adventure.
