The New Island Party

I was pleased to read this new party has collected enough signatures to run candidates in the next election. However, their hopes of becoming a major party will need a great deal of thought.  Just being angry at the current crew of politicians is not going to endear them to the voters. Recent amalgamations are done and dusted, no use complaining. The Municipal Government Act will not in my opinion be a catalyst in any future election. There are other issues to be considered that are much more important to voters. What will this new party offer to improve health care, housing, inflation, Doctor shortage, mental health? People need a clear definition of the term “affordable housing” is it indeed affordable, and to whom. As an example, someone working minimum wage full time at Tim Hortons, what would that person consider affordable? I realize most of these issues are beyond your control, but you must have policy that will resonate with voters.
It is critically important the party does not just lay blame, while indeed there is much blame to go around. Faulting MacLauchlan, Ghiz, King or PBB isn’t going to help. Avoid falling into traps set by people like Desserud. He has already labeled you as similar to the old United Farmers party. He suggests your party is both right and left. He claims it will only attract the disenfranchised voters. I believe he will be proven correct if the party leans in that direction. The Island Party should in my opinion not mention the controversial truckers freedom convoy. Keep strictly to island issues, and yes fewer MLAs is good. Proportional Representation also good. Don’t take issue with what the Libs-PCs- Greens have done in the past. Focus on today, focus on the needs of seniors, unemployed, homeless and public transport, and you already know the many more things we islanders are lacking or struggling with. I’m excited to see this party emerge, the more choices the better and less chance of false majorities. I wish you all success.
God Bless and keep reading
