I consider only one good thing came from my six marriage to Irene and that was Caroline. My beautiful little daughter was born on the 14th January 1965 at the Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax. She was and is still my pride and joy and the reason the marriage lasted as long as it did. Nevertheless, it couldn’t continue much longer and I had to do something.
At the church I spoke with the Rev Byron Howlett about my situation, and thanks to his advice and guidance I began divorce proceedings in the spring of 1969. Six months later, on the 29th November 1969, I walked down the steps of the Nova Scotia Court House a free man. Halifax Provincial Court House
The divorce had taken less than ten minutes. Irene wasn’t required to be in attendance and I suspect she wasn’t upset about that. She was some eight months pregnant at the time.
I have difficulty describing how I felt on that day. It was like a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders. A feeling that I imagined was like being released from Alcatraz. My six-year nightmare was finally over. Amazingly it was exactly six years to the day on the 29th Nov 1969. ( married 29th Nov 1963) I have never forgotten Byron or the people of Wyndhome Christian Church, for their support and caring help during those awful times. Shortly after the divorce I gained Caroline’s custody. My Christmases returned to happy joyous times once again.
God Bless and Merry Christmas.
